PROJECT OUTLINE
This project aims to enhance fairness and efficiency in alcohol testing within the transportation industry through the “ALBLO Cloud Service” provided by Tanita Corporation. Compliant with the advanced alcohol testing standards required in the aviation industry, the system integrates facial recognition and image-based activity logging to prevent identity fraud and test manipulation. It includes an interlock mechanism that temporarily halts pre-flight preparations if a test is not completed.
Jointly developed by Tanita Corporation and AQTIA Inc., this system provides an efficient alcohol testing solution while reducing implementation and operational costs for operators. Currently, the service is active with domestic airlines, already serving tens of thousands of users, and is also being extended to various transportation operators requiring alcohol safety measures.

PROJECT STEPS
-
Ideas Proposal / Subject Decission / Planning
With multiple alcohol detection incidents occurring in the aviation industry, there was a growing need for strict management protocols across the sector. While Tanita has provided high-precision alcohol detection devices, the company saw a demand for additional features like fraud prevention, mobile app integration, and cloud systems, which it had not yet offered. In response, Tanita sought the expertise of AQTIA, requesting the development of a business plan for implementing a cloud service and the creation of a prototype to verify its feasibility.
-
Prototype Development
Given the limited time to develop a new alcohol detector, we explored ways to connect existing products to devices like the iPad. By leveraging the current communication features, we confirmed that data could be transferred to the iPad. Subsequently, we tested a prototype to see if log storage and fraud prevention through facial recognition—key features required for a cloud system—could be integrated with alcohol testing. This approach verified the feasibility of connecting existing products with iPads and the cloud.
Later, Tanita Corporation developed and launched a new model of the alcohol detector with fraud prevention features tailored for this service.
-
Commercialization / Development
After completing the prototype, we proposed the new system to airlines, and upon acceptance, proceeded with full-scale system development in collaboration with the airline. Through this joint development, we deepened our understanding of industry-specific terminology and operations, allowing us to design a user-friendly system that meets the unique needs of the aviation sector. This service is designed to manage alcohol testing with strict oversight and integrates with airline systems to prevent fraudulent tests, ensuring a safe and reliable environment.
-
Business Expansion / Improvement / Operation
The service was first adopted by a major airline, which led to interest from various other airlines, resulting in a gradual rollout. It has since grown into a service used by tens of thousands of users, with continuous improvements and stable operation. To support inquiries during nighttime hours, we established a 24-hour call center, along with a system for rapid error detection and response. This minimizes operational disruptions for airlines in case of service issues, ensuring highly reliable operations.
